PURPOSE

The role of the Flagler College Dance Team is to support Flagler College Athletics as an NCAA, Division II College.

The Dance Team energetically performs at all men’s and women’s home basketball games and select community events. The dancers practice regularly, attend dance camps and participate in competitions as well as fundraising activities throughout the season to create the best dance team possible.

STYLE

The dancers are talented and capable of performing many motivating routines which are a mix of hip-hop, jazz, contemporary, and more. The dancers often get creative and will also perform themed dances such as disco at certain College functions. It is not necessary to have formal dance training; however, most of the dancers have had training either on a high school dance team or with a studio dance group.  Dancers are encouraged to create their choreography and often work together to create dynamic routines.

SEASON

The season begins in the middle of September and ends the beginning of March. The dancers are expected to attend certain functions such as community events after the season ends.

The dance team practices 3 times a week for 1-2 hours. Each dancer is expected to physically train outside of practice. Additional practices may be added closer to competitions.

TEAM

The Flagler College Dance Team consists of 14 dancers plus 4 alternates. The alternates will perform at select games as well as train with the dancers to further their skills. It is a great way for younger dancers to gain valuable experience.  In addition to dancing, dancers also select a committee that they belong to in the areas of choreography, costume design, community involvement or fundraising. Some dancers serve on more than one committee.

AUDITIONS

Dance Team auditions begin with a group warm-up. After the group warm-up the team captains will teach a short routine that contains a mixture of dance styles such as jazz and hip-hop. Once the routine is complete, groups of dancers will be randomly selected to perform the routine in front of a panel of judges. During this time judges will be reviewing the skill level of those auditioning.

Judges will be looking for talent, presence, enthusiasm, and attitude. Once the team is selected, practices immediately begin.
