Drysdale Field
The baseball field, Drysdale Field, was dedicated Apr. 12, 2011 before the Flagler-Savannah College of Art and Design game. The field is named in honor of Walter Irvine Drysdale (1905-93), a native of St. Augustine. "Driz" as he was called, was a star athlete in high school and went on to the University of Florida where he played freshman football. He gave tennis lessons at the Ponce de Leon and Alcazar Hotels, was a club champion golfer and was a catcher on the St. Augustine Saints professional baseball team.
The field is originally known as Flagler Stadium and was dedicated on Feb. 4, 2000. The Saints defeated Rollins College 3-0 in front of 400 fans. Flagler Stadium's capacity is 700 and has a natural grass playing surface. The stadium is fully equipped with a "Ballpark Bistro" concession stand. It has a state-of-the-art lighting system and dual batting cages with lights. The practice infield area is located behind the center field wall. A brand new meeting area was completed just before the start of the 2011 season. Located right next to the third base dugout, fans have a covered area with four tables and seats to relax in the shade and socialize.
In November of 2015 a new infield artificial turf was laid down replacing the former grass surface. The artificial turf covers the entire infield, except for the pitcher's mound which will remain the traditional clay surface. The turf extends a couple feet into the outfield where it stops and the natural grass surface begins. The baselines and batters boxes are a permanent fixture on the turf. Even the "dirt" in the infield looks like dirt due to the color, but that is turf as well.
There are a lot of colleges and universities, mainly in the northern reaches of the United States, who have artificial turf fields, or at least infields, due to easy maintenance and durability in harsh weather. The turf also absorbs water at a better rate than the natural fields do.
