CLEMMONS, N.C. − The Flagler College men’s golf team placed fifth overall with a three-day total of 888 and was led by medalist Chris Bray (Hilliard, Fla./Hilliard HS) who finished the 54-hole event with an even par 210 at the Will Wilson Southeast Preview which concluded Tuesday at the Tanglewood Golf Club’s Championship Course.

Bray is Flagler’s first medalist since Jack Melnicoff shared the honor at Northwood Invitational Mar. 2, 2004. Bray shot a 3-over 73 on the first day and followed that with a 4-under 66 yesterday. He shot a 1-over 71 to jump over two golfers for the top spot. Bray held off three golfers by one stroke.

Barton College, ranked No. 10 in the last Golf World/Nike Coaches Poll, took home team honors with an 879 and won by just two strokes. No. 16 USC Aiken finished with an 881 while No. 18 Lander University and No. 9 Belmont Abbey College tied for third with identical 884’s.

Alex Bennett (Rochester, Mich./Scottsdale CC) wrapped up with a 2-over 72 to end the tournament with a 13-over 223 and in a eight-way tie for 14th place. Joel Dahlenburg (St. Augustine, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) carded a 4-over 74 to end his three rounds with a 19-over 229 and a tie for 41st place. Steven Davis (Orange Park, Fla./Fleming Island HS) shot a final round 74 and finished in a deadlock for 44th place with a 20-over 230. Greg Mergel (Allenwood, N.J./Wall Township HS) rounded out the Saints as he carded a 78 to finish in a tie for 54th place with a 232.
