No. 7 Valdosta State sweeps Flagler

VALDOSTA, Ga. − Seventh-ranked Valdosta State University swept a softball doubleheader from Flagler College, 9-0 in five innings and 9-5, Sunday afternoon at the VSU Softball Complex. Valdosta State won its fifth game in a row and improved to 29-5. Flagler fell to 12-23.

In the opener, Holly Satterfield (9-2) held Flagler to just one hit and retired the last 13 batters she faced in a row. She struck out three batters.

Alyssa Shirey (2-3, 2R, 3RBI) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run, and the Blazers erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning to bring on the mercy rule.

April Hutchens (1-3, R, 3RBI) ended the game with a three-run home run.

Melessa Jackson singled, doubled, scored a run and drove in another for the Blazers while Andi Braswell singled twice and scored a run.

Sam Boatner (Auburndale, Fla./Polk CC) (6-8) went 4 2/3 innings and allowed five hits and four earned runs. Boatner struck out four and retired 12 of the first 15 batters she faced.

Heather Hill (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Indian River CC) had Flagler’s lone hit, a single, in the first inning.

In game two, Clare Wamsley’s two-run double in the fifth inning broke open a 4-2 game and put the Blazers up 6-2 en route to a 9-5 win.

Brittany Simmons (Ocala, Fla./Chattanooga State Tech CC) belted her first home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the top of the sixth, but the Saints could not get any closer.

Valdosta State scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth without hitting the ball out of the infield.

Amber Shaw was a perfect 4-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Braswell went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and one RBI. Marli Littlefield went 2-for-4 with her 13th home run of the season, three runs scored and two more driven in.

Brianna Collis (7-0) earned the win in relief. She tossed 3 2/3 innings and allowed six hits, three runs and struck out three.

Simmons led the Saints attack with a 2-for-3 performance, adding a double to her home run, and she scored a run and drove in three. Hill doubled twice while Boatner and Kaley King (Jacksonville, Fla./Trinity Christian Academy) each singled twice.

Jana Owen (St. Augustine, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) (3-6) gave up three hits and three runs in the first inning to take the loss.

Flagler hosts Palm Beach Atlantic University on Saturday (Apr. 4) at 1 p.m. at Saints Field.

STARKVILLE, Miss. − Flagler College recruit Katie Enright (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills HS) was selected to the 2010 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Second-Team which was released Friday afternoon. Of the 48 honorees to the three teams, she is one of only two non-NCAA Division I signees and the lone Division II signee.
