ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Lillian McGill recorded a double-double with a game-high 20 points and a game-high 13 rebounds as 20th-ranked (WBCA/NCAA Division II) University of the District of Columbia defeated Flagler College in the first game of the National Independent Women’s Basketball Tournament Thursday night at Flagler Gym. UDC won its fourth game in a row and raised its record to 23-4. Flagler lost its third game in a row and fell to 4-24.

McGill made 8-of-12 from the field and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Nicole Cooper and Tamonica Brackins each tallied 12 points for the Firebirds while DeVaughn Hailey handed out a game-high 12 assists.

UDC dominated the glass, out-rebounding Flagler 48-26 and enjoyed a 44-20 coring advantage in the paint.

The Firebirds broke a 6-all tie with a 19-6 run over the next 9:50 to seize control of the game. UDC scored the last nine points in a row in the run.

District of Columbia took a 30-21 lead into the half.

UDC went on a 9-2 run to start the second half with Brackins scoring the last five points in a row. Her layup with 18:10 left gave the Firebirds a 39-23 lead.

Stacy Griffith’s layup with 13:50 to go gave District of Columbia its largest lead of the game at 49-30.

The Saints answered with nine straight points over the next 2:45 to close to within 10, but could not get any closer.

Adrienne Donelson (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson HS) and Jalisa Foster (St. Petersburg, Fla./Pinellas Park HS) each scored a team-high 14 points for Flagler. Foster made 8-of-10 from the free throw line and also grabbed five rebounds. Jen Mitchell (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS) chipped in with 10 points.

Flagler wraps up the tournament on Saturday (Mar. 7) against the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon at 7 p.m. UDC and UPRB meet tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
