Flagler women rally to defeat P.R.-Bayamon, 63-60

Christy Forsyth scored all eight of her points in the final eight minutes, including sinking a 3-pointer to give Flagler a 52-51 lead en route to a 63-60 win Saturday night.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Chanti Beckett (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield HS) scored a game-high 26 points to help lead Flagler College to a 63-60 win over the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon Saturday night in the third game of the National Independent Women’s Basketball Tournament at Flagler Gym. Flagler finished the tournament with a record of 1-1 and completed its season with a 5-24 record. UPRB posted a 0-2 record in the tournament and fell to 15-10 overall.

Beckett, who earned All-Tournament honors, made 9-of-13 from the field and was 8-for-12 from the free throw line. Jalisa Foster (St. Petersburg, Fla./Pinellas Park HS) added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds and earned a spot on the All-Tournamnet team.

The Saints opened the game on a 14-5 run and led by as many as 12 (33-21) in the first half.

The Vaqueras closed the half on a 10-2 run and trailed 35-31 at the half. Flagler forced 18 UPRB turnovers in the first half and converted those into 18 points.

Puerto Rico-Bayamon continued its run to open the second half, 15-6, to take a 46-41 lead after a pair of free throw by Angelie Morales. In total, the Vaqueras went on a 25-8 run over 8:51 to erase the Saints lead.

Flagler would take the lead for good after a Christy Forsyth (Tallahassee, Fla./Amos P. Godby HS) 3-pointer with 7:46 left. The Saints led 52-51.

UPRB trailed by as many as six, but closed to within a point (61-60) after Normarle Montalvo sank the first of two free throws with 1:02 remaining, but her second shot went off the left side of the rim.

The Saints has a chance to put the game away, but Beckett missed a layup with 46 seconds left, but Morales was called for an offensive foul on the other end with 26 seconds left. She fouled Lauren Bailie (Loganville, Ga./Loganville HS), ending her night with a fifth foul. Bailie missed both free throws with 21 seconds left and the Vaqueras had another opportunity to win the game.

After a timeout with 15 seconds left, Katiria Rodriguez was called for traveling with 12 seconds left and Forsyth was fouled with nine seconds left. Forsyth made both free throws to seal the victory for Flagler.

Flagler forced 28 UPRB turnovers and converted those into 28 points.

Morales, an All-Tournament selection, led the Vaqueras with 20 points and eight rebounds. Keisha Bachour chipped in with 13 points.

Also on the All-Tournament Team for the University of the District of Columbia were LaQuanda Brandon and Lillian McGill.
