Saints on "The Farm" and summer leagues

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Here is a mid-season progress reports on the former Flagler College Saints who are playing in the Minor Leagues around the country through games played Monday, June 22.

Chris Barnwell is playing shortstop for the Indianapolis Indians, the Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is batting .130 with three doubles, four runs batted in and has played in 33 games. Last year at Albuquerque (Triple-A), he batted .276 with 20 doubles, six home runs, 42 RBI, 91 hits and 16 stolen bases.

Wade Lamont, a first baseman, is playing for the Oneonta Tigers in the Single-A Short-Season New York-Penn League. The Tigers have just started their season and Lamont has yet to play. Last year, Lamont batted .255 with nine doubles and RBI in 34 games with Oneonta.

Brandon Rapoza, a relief pitcher, is playing for the Brevard County Manatees, a Single-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, and has a 1-0 record and a 1.00 earned run average in 18 appearances. In 27 innings pitched, he has allowed 26 hits, struck out 15 and walked only two batters. Last year between the Arizona League team and Helena, a Short-Season Single-A team, he posted a 0-3 record with a 1.96 ERA and collected two saves. Rapoza made 21 appearances, all in relief.

John Goryl is in Arizona and will play for the Cleveland Indians’ team in the Arizona Summer League.

There are several more Flagler players playing in summer collegiate leagues.

Pitcher Tyler McKendree is playing for the Alexandria (Minn.) Beetles of the prestigious Northwoods League. He has made 10 appearances, second-most on the staff, with one save and sports a 3.10 ERA. In 20 1/3 innings pitched, McKendree has fanned 12 and allowed 18 hits.

Outfielder K.C. McCarthy and first baseman Zach Bove are playing in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. McCarthy is playing for the Lowell (Mass.) All-Americans and is batting .125 with four hits and three RBI. Bove is playing for the Vermont Mountaineers and is looking for his first hit in 12 at bats.

Catcher Kirby Johnson is playing for the Sanford (Fla.) River Rats of the Florida Collegiate Summer League. He is batting .158 with three hits and two RBI.

Playing locally for the St. Augustine Saints of the Great South League are pitchers Adam Jaudon and Jonny Gaines as well as infielders Travis Coverston and Taylor Mathis. Playing for the Florida Legends, in the same league, is pitcher Tony Kirkland. On the World of Baseball Angels, based out of Jacksonville, are pitcher Drew Jackson and incoming freshman catcher Erick Figueroa.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Zach Bove (Winter Haven, Fla./Central Florida CC) went 4-for-7 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and six runs batted in to help lead Flagler College to a doubleheader sweep of Augusta State University in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams at Flagler Stadium. Flagler won the opener 6-4 and triumphed 14-5 in the nightcap.
