Bobcats claw out an 80-69 win over Saints

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Ty Rowland led five players in double figures with 18 points and also dished out eight assists as Georgia College & State University defeated Flagler College 80-69 in a Peach Belt Conference men’s basketball game Monday night at Flagler Gym.

GCSU won its eighth game in a row and improved to 14-2 overall and is the lone undefeated conference team with a record of 7-0. Flagler lost its third consecutive game and fell to 7-9 overall and 2-5 in the league.

Graham Martin and Jake Rios each contributed 13 points for the bobcats while Josh Hurst recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and also dished out four assists. Ryan Aquino tallied 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

GCSU shot 51.1% (24-47) from the field and made 38.1% (8-21) from 3-point range. The Bobcats held the Saints to just 37.7% (26-69) shooting from the field and 20.8% (5-24) from 3-point range.

Eddie Fowler (Deltona, Fla./Pasco-Hernando CC) scored a game-high 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field. Kenny Moore (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach HS) recorded his third double-double of the season, and second in as many games, with 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. John Pietkiewicz (Winter Park, Fla./New Hampton (N.H.) Prep) added 13 points while D.J. Ferguson (Orlando, Fla./Bishop Moore HS) notched his fourth double-double with 11 points and a game-high 10 assists.

Cody Shuffler (Valdese, N.C./East Burke HS) sank a five-foot jumper with 3:23 left in the first half to cut the deficit to four points (24-20), but GCSU went on a 10-1 spurt over the next 1:43 and took a 36-25 lead into the half.

In the second half, Fowler’s alley-oop dunk got the home crowd back into the game and put the Saints to within nine points (48-39), but the Bobcats answered with a 13-3 run to take its largest lead of the game, 19 points (61-42) after a Rowland trey.

Flagler hosts North Georgia College & State University in a Peach Belt Conference game on Thursday (Jan. 28) at 7:30 p.m. The game will also serve as a fundraiser as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer “Suits and Sneakers” Weekend. Donations will be accepted to support the American Cancer Society’s fight to find a cure for cancer.
