Men's basketball weekly preview
Eddie Fowler
Flagler's playoff hopes are still alive with two games remaining against Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke.
The Flagler men’s basketball team split two games last week against fifth-ranked (NABC/Division II Poll) Augusta State University and Lander University. The Saints fell 85-62 to the Jaguars but bounced back against the Bearcats, 66-54.

ASU’s Ben Madgen, the Peach Belt Conference’s leading scorer, dropped 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting against Flagler. The Jaguars opened the second half with a small 14-5 run that put them ahead 59-37.

Saints’ forward Eddie Fowler scored a team-high 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Chad July added 11 points before fouling out with 3:42 left in the game.

Flagler traveled to Lander this past Saturday and was able to notch its third-consecutive road win.

Led by John Pietkiewicz’s season-high 24 points, the Saints used a 25-7 run midway through the second half to tame the Bearcats. Pietkiewicz needs to hit just four more three-pointers to break the school’s all-time record held by Pete Rhoden (251; 1995-99).

Fowler tallied 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting and also blocked two shots. Kenny Moore contributed 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.

Moore leads the conference in field goal percentage hitting 63.0% of his shots.

Flagler is in a tie for the fourth and final playoff spot in the PBC East Division with a 10-15 record. The Saints return to Flagler Gym on Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. for their final home game against Francis Marion University.

This will be the second game between the Saints and Patriots. Flagler fell 83-51 to FMU on Jan. 23.

Simel Boyd scored a game-high 19 points to lead Francis Marion to victory. Boyd hits 53.9% of his shots, sixth-best in the PBC. The Patriots out-scored the Saints 54-22 in the paint and forced a season-high 22 Flagler turnovers which were converted into 30 points.

Kenny Moore tallied 14 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Saints. Moore also added five blocks.

Flagler rounds out its regular season schedule at UNC Pembroke. The Braves defeated the Saints 92-83 on Feb. 6.

Chris Hargrove scored a team-high 20 points for UNCP who out-scored Flagler 60-49 in the second half. Shahmel Bracket leads the Braves in scoring averaging 14.5 ppg.

D.J. Ferguson scored 22 points, dished out nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds for the Saints.
