Flagler sweeps conference opener

Jarrod Simmons went 3-for-5 with a double and a grand slam in the second game of Flagler's doubleheader sweep of Augusta State Saturday night.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Zach Bove (Winter Haven, Fla./Central Florida CC) went 4-for-7 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and six runs batted in to help lead Flagler College to a doubleheader sweep of Augusta State University in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams at Flagler Stadium. Flagler won the opener 6-4 and triumphed 14-5 in the nightcap.

Flagler improved to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt while Augusta State fell to 6-9 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

In the opener, Will Percy’s (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary’s HS) executed a perfect suicide squeeze play, and even beat the throw to first to give Flagler a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning. The Saints scored three times in the frame to take the lead. Jarrod Simmons’ (Jacksonville, Fla./Central Florida CC) RBI double tied the game and Bove added an RBI single to for insurance.

Percy went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while also stealing a base. Bove went 2-for-4 with three RBI while Travis Coverston (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) doubled twice and scored a run.

Zach Gray (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Bryan College) (1-1) tossed two innings in relief to earn the win and Tyler McKendree (Jacksonville, Fla./Bartrram Trail HS) retired all three batters he faced in the ninth to earn the save. Jonathan Armold (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest School) started and went six innings and scattered nine hits, allowed four runs and struck out nine.

Kenny Smith went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI for the Jaguars. Alex Walker singled, doubled and drove in a run.

Reliever Chase Johnston (0-3) went an inning and two-thirds and gave up five hits and three runs. He spelled starter Joah Evans who tossed five and one-third innings, surrendered 10 hits, allowed three runs and fanned five.

In the second game, the Saints got on the board early when Jose Rohena (Tampa, Fla./St. Petersburg College) hit an RBI single in the first and Bove followed with a home run to left-center and Flagler led 3-0.

Flagler also plated four runs in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead. Simmons scored from second on a base hit by Cale Owen (Clearwater, Fla./home school) with the aid of a fielding error by the Jaguar right fielder. A wild pitch allowed another run to score along with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.

Simmons hit a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to cap the scoring.

Adam Jaudon (St. Augustine, Fla./Pedro Menendez HS) (2-0) tossed five innings, scattered seven hits and allowed two runs.

Simmons finished the game 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and collected four RBI. Owen went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one driven in. Bove went 2-for-3 with a double, a homer, three runs scored and three RBI.

Flagler pounded out 14 hits and is 1-5 hitters went 10-for-20 with 10 run scored and eight RBI.

Wilson Taylor (2-2) lasted four innings and gave up nine hits, seven earned runs and struck out six.

Tony Baker went 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored and two more driven in.

The same two teams meet on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Flagler Stadium.
