Flagler and PBA softball split doubleheader

Brittney Hatem went 4-for-7 with a triple, scored twice and collected an RBI as Flagler split a doubleheader against PBA Wednesday night.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − The Flagler College Saints and Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish split a softball doubleheader Wednesday night at Saints Field. PBA won the opener 9-1 while Flagler took the nightcap 8-5.

Flagler’s record stands at 14-12 while Palm Beach Atlantic is now 15-7.

In the opener, Cassidy Faircloth belted a three-run home run to left field in the top of the first inning, which would be all the runs PBA pitcher Ashley Jones (9-5) would need.

Jones tossed a complete game three-hitter and allowed just one run and fanned 11.

The Sailfish scored another run in the fifth and five in the seventh, four of which were unearned as the Saints committed three errors.

Natalia Ojeda went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two more driven in. Candace Horton went 2-for-4 with a run scored and drove in a run.

Brittney Hatem (Hialeah, Fla./Wallace CC-Dothan) went 2-for-3 with a triple and scored a run.

Kelly Riddick (Hampton, Fla./Central Florida CC) (8-8) tossed six innings, allowed five hits, four runs and struck out seven.

In the nightcap, Flagler erupted for eight runs in the first inning and held on late for an 8-5 win.

Heather Hill (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Indian River CC) socked a three-run home run, Brittany Simmons (Ocala, Fla./Chattanooga State Tech CC) hit a two-run double, Lauren Ely (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs HS) added a two-run single and Hatem singled twice and drove in a run with her second hit in the bottom of the first inning.

PBA starter Chris Donovan (1-2) lasted just a third of an inning, surrendered seven hits and eight runs.

Riddick (9-8) came on in relief of starter Kristen Chapman (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood HS) early in the fourth and held the Sailfish to just one hit and struck out six batters in the last four frames. Chapman tossed three-plus innings, allowed six hits, three earned runs and walked three.

Simmons went 3-for-4 with a double, scored a run and drove in another for the Saints. Hatem singled twice, scored once and collected one RBI.

Horton hit an RBI-double in the second for PBA.

ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College softball program and fourth-year head coach Kristen Overton announced its 2012 schedule this afternoon. The Saints will play 54 games with 22 of those being played at Flagler Field. Flagler will also face a 20-game Peach Belt Conference slate.
