Braves pound out 33 hits in doubleheader sweep

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Josh Haley went 6-for-9 and Jason Coker collected five hits, including three doubles and a home run to help power 18th-ranked (Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30) UNC Pembroke to a sweep of Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Flagler Stadium.

UNC Pembroke won its sixth game in a row and improved to 16-3 overall and 6-2 in the conference. Flagler had its four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 12-9 overall and 3-2 in league play.

In the opener, UNCP wiped out a 5-4 deficit with a three-run seventh inning. Tom Porricelli got tied the game with a run-scoring single and Haley and Alex Pearce followed with run scoring singles.

Flagler could only muster two hits in the last four innings.

Coker went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a home run and scored three times. Seth Kivett hit a two-run home run in the first and added a single. Kenny Mickens, Porricelli and Haley each collected two singles.

Matt McGovern (5-1) tossed six innings, scattered 12 hits, allowed five runs and struck out six batters. Brian Willis came on in the ninth to get his second save of the season after getting a double play and ground out to end the game.

Travis Coverston (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs while Jose Rohena (Tampa, Fla./St. Petersburg College) singled and hit a solo home run. Zach Bove (Winter Haven, Fla./Central Florida CC), Dagmar Pena (Jacksonville, Fla./U. of Tampa) and John Sgromolo (Fleming Island, Fla./Clay HS) each singled twice for the Saints.

Zach Gray (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Bryan College) (1-2) tossed a third of an inning in relief and surrendered four hits and three runs. Jonathan Armold (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest School) started and went six innings and allowed eight hits, four runs and fanned seven. Heath Storey (Kennett, Mo./Jefferson College) closed the final two and two-thirds innings and surrendered just two hits and struck out four batters.

The Saints rallied from an early 3-0 deficit with a four-run fourth. Coverston hit a two-run double and Payne Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) singled him home to key the inning.

In the nightcap, the Braves rallied from an early 2-0 hole to tie the game at 2-2 in the third, and then blew open a 5-4 game with three runs in the seventh and eighth in a 12-4 victory.

Max Gagnon hit the first of his two home runs in the fourth inning, a three-run shot to give UNCP a 5-4 lead. He finished the game 3-for-5 with five runs batted in.

Haley went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and drove in a run. Keith Whitman went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and collected two RBI. Joe Mangum singled three for the Braves. Aaron Parnell singled twice and scored twice.

Justin Yow (5-0) hurled eight innings and allowed seven hits, four runs and struck out seven. He also retired 11 batters in a row and 21-of-23.

Rohena singled twice and belted a two-run homer for Flagler. Coverston hit a two-run single in the first.

Adam Jaudon (St. Augustine, Fla./Pedro Menendez HS) (3-1) tossed six innings, allowed 13 hits and six earned runs.

The same two teams will meet tomorrow (Mar. 14) at 1 p.m. to conclude the series.
