Flagler downs Lincoln Memorial, 10-6

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − A four-run eighth inning sent Flagler College past Lincoln Memorial University, 10-6, Wednesday night in a non-conference baseball game at Flagler Stadium.

Flagler won its third game in a row and raised its record to 15-9 overall while Lincoln Memorial, a member of the South Atlantic Conference, lost its fourth straight game and fell to 14-12.

In the eighth inning, Justin McKenna (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Allen D. Nease HS) hit a bases load two-out single to left which scored two runs, but LMU left fielder Chase Quarles misplayed the grounder which allowed another run to score and McKenna took second base. Flagler took a 9-6 lead. Two batters later, Tyler Vanover (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Providence HS) knocked McKenna in with a triple to center field.

McKenna went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and was hit by a pitch twice. John Sgromolo (Fleming Island, Fla./Clay HS) singled and hit a solo home run. Travis Coverston (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) singled twice.

Tyler McKendree (Jacksonville, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings in relief and scattered two hits. Josh Kempa (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk CC) started on the mound and went four innings, allowed five hits, two runs and struck out four.

The first six hitters in the line-up for the Railsplitters went 15-for-25 and were paced by Quarles who went 3-for-5 with a triple. Cody Pack went 2-for-4 with a double and collected two RBI. Eric Kitts went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, including a two-run singled in the top of the seventh which tied the game 6-6. Gelson Perez doubled for Lincoln Memorial.

Garrett Copeland (3-1) took the loss in relief. He tossed two innings and allowed two hits, two earned runs and struck out two. Tyler Mansfield started on the mound for LMU and lasted two and two-thirds innings, surrendered three hits, four runs and walked four batters,

Flagler returns to Peach Belt Conference action this weekend when it travels to Florence, S.C. to face 13th-ranked (Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30) Francis Marion University for a three-game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 20) at 1 p.m.
