FLORENCE, S.C. − No. 13 (Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30) Francis Marion University used a four-run fifth inning to rally past Flagler College 7-2 in a Peach Belt Conference East Division baseball game Sunday afternoon at Cormell Field.

Francis Marion improved to 21-6 overall and 5-4 in the Peach Belt while Flagler fell to 16-11 overall and 5-4 in league play.

With the score tied at 2-all in the bottom of the fifth, Chris Honeycutt hit an RBI double to left-center to break the tie, then Paul Shuey followed with a two-run home run. Two batters later, Josh Smith knocked in another run with a base hit to give the Patriots a 6-2 lead. The hit chased Flagler starter Johnny Gaines (Jacksonville, Fla./Hillsborough CC) from the game.

Gaines (4-3) tossed four and two-thirds innings and allowed six hits and four earned runs.

Shuey added a solo home run in the seventh for Francis Marion. He went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and drove in three runs. Honeycutt singled, doubled, scored twice and drove in another. Smith, Barrett Kleinknecht and Josh Biggers each hit two singles.

Josh Edgin (4-2) tossed a complete game and scattered nine hits, allowed two runs and struck out eight batters.

John Sgromolo (Fleming Island, Fla./Clay HS) hit a run scoring single in the fourth and Nate Fudala (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin HS) drove in a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, also in the fourth. Cale Owen (Clearwater, Fla./home school) collected three singles while Jose Rohena (Tampa, Fla./St. Petersburg College) and Dagmar Pena  (Jacksonville, Fla./U. of Tampa) each singled twice.

Tim Lappin (Jacksonville, Fla./Paxon HS) finished the last three and one-third innings, scattered seven hits and allowed one run.

Flagler hosts top-ranked Florida Southern College on Mar. 24 at 7 p.m. at Flagler Stadium.
