ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Barry University swept a non-conference softball doubleheader over Flagler College Wednesday night at Saints Field. Barry won the opener 6-2 and rallied to take the nightcap 7-5.

Barry extended its winning streak to three games and improved to 13-3. Flagler fell to 9-11.

In the opener, Barry scored all of the runs it would need in the second when it posted a three-spot. Taylor Newman led off the inning with a walk and Brianna Smith by beating out a bunt single to third. Two batters later, Cassy Zamora singled up the middle to load the bases. Sarah Broeseker dropped down a squeeze bunt to plate the game’s first run. Grace Collins followed with a single to left which scored Smith and then got into a rundown between first and second which allowed Zamora to score as well.

Amanda Goelz went 1-for-3 with a double and drove in two runs for the Buccaneers. Smith (6-3) tossed seven innings, scattered four hits, walked eight and struck out nine.

Brittney Hatem (Hialeah, Fla./Wallace CC-Dothan) went 2-for-3 with a double. Kelly Riddick (Hampton, Fla./Central Florida CC) (6-7) hurled seven innings, allowed four hits and three earned runs and fanned 11.

In the nightcap, Flagler held a 3-1 lead after a three-run second inning, but Barry rallied to tie the game in the fourth and then took control with a four-run fifth inning en route to a 7-5 win.

Kaycee Lisa (Seminole, Fla./Seminole HS) led off the second for the Saints with a base hit to left. She advanced to second and third on wild pitches and the next two batters reached after being hit and walked. Kirsten Immel (Ocala, Fla./Vanguard HS) singled home Lisa and Lauren Ely (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs HS) drew a bases loaded walk to put Flagler ahead 2-1. After a pitching change, Hatem singled home the next run.

The Bucanneers scored single runs in the third and the fourth, but broke the game wide open when Broeseker hit a bases clearing double in Barry’s four-run fourth. Earlier in the frame, Newman hit an RBI-single which proved to be the game winning hit.

Chelsea Welch (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia HS) hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth, but the Saints couldn’t get any closer.

Newman led Barry’s offensive attack going 3-fpr-4 with two runs scored and another driven in. Collins singled twice while Jessica Tabor went 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Broeseker went 2-for-3 with a double and five RBI.

Jessica Bevlin (1-0) tossed five and two-third innings in relief and allowed seven hits, two runs and struck out five. Smith retired the last batter of the game to earn her third save of the season.

Brittany Simmons (Ocala, Fla./Chattanooga State Tech CC) went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Immel singled twice and drove in a run.

Jana Owen (St. Augustine, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) (0-2) tossed an inning and two-thirds in relief and surrendered five hits and five earned runs.

Flagler hosts Wesley College of Dover, Del., tomorrow (Mar. 4) at 4 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.

STARKVILLE, Miss. − Flagler College recruit Katie Enright (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills HS) was selected to the 2010 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Second-Team which was released Friday afternoon. Of the 48 honorees to the three teams, she is one of only two non-NCAA Division I signees and the lone Division II signee.
