No. 6 Florida Southern defeats Flagler, 9-1

LAKELAND, Fla. − Wade Kirkland went 2-for-5 with a home run and three runs batted in to help lead No. 6 (Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30) Florida Southern College to a 9-1 win over Flagler College in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday night at Henley Field.

Florida Southern improved to 27-5 on the season while Flagler fell to 18-14.

The Moccasins scored all the runs they would need in the third inning. Tony Mitchell put Florida Southern on the board with an RBI double off Flagler reliever Josh Kempa (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk CC). Kelvin Clark drove home the other run in the inning on a groundout, which proved to be the game-winning run.

The Mocs added a run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.

The Saints got on the board in the eighth inning when Jarrod Simmons (Jacksonville, Fla./Central Florida CC) hit a solo home run to right field.

Tucker Pryor (5-1) was credited the win after starting the game and tossing three scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and struck out three. The Mocs used a pre-determined rotation of pitchers, five in all.

Clark singled twice, doubled and scored twice. Mitchell hit two doubles and drove in two runs. Tyler Benzel singled twice and collected one RBI.

Cale Owen (Clearwater, Fla./home school) singled and doubled for Flagler. Cade Smith (Ocala, Fla./North Marion HS) singled twice.

Kempa (1-2) went one inning in relief and surrendered two hits and two runs. Seven different pitchers were used in the game.

Flagler returns to Peach Belt Conference play with a three-game weekend series against 10th-ranked USC Aiken. The two teams will play a doubleheader Friday (Apr. 2) at 4 p.m. and finish on Saturday with a single game at 2 p.m.
