Flagler trounces No. 24 Saint Xavier, 22-2

John Sgromolo went 4-for-6 with a double, a home run and four RBI to help lead Flagler to a 22-2 rout of Saint Xavier Friday afternoon.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − John Sgromolo (Fleming Island, Fla./Clay HS) went 4-6 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and collected four runs batted in to help lead Flagler College to a 22-2 win over No. 24 (NAIA) Saint Xavier University of Chicago in a non-conference baseball game Friday afternoon at Flagler Stadium.

Flagler won its third game in a row and raised its record to 11-7 while Saint Xavier had its three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 6-4.

After spotting the Cougars two runs in the first inning, the Saints plated three on one swing of the bat from Dagmar Pena (Jacksonville, Fla./U. of Tampa) who hit his first home run of the season over the right field wall.

After a three-run second, Sgromolo belted a two-run home to right field which gave the Saints an 8-2 lead.

Six more runs were scored in the fourth with three coming on Jarrod Simmons’ (Jacksonville, Fla./Central Florida CC) home run to right-center. He finished the day 3-for-4 with three runs scored and collected four RBI.

The Saints added another run in the fifth, but had its streak of 12 consecutive innings of scoring at least a run snapped in the sixth.

Flagler tacked on another run in the seventh and six more in the eighth.

Every Flagler batter had at least one hit in the 23-hit barrage. Will Percy (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary’s HS) went 3-for-5 with a triple, four runs scored and two RBI while Pena finished 3-for-6 with a home run three runs scored and four RBI. Travis Coverston (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) singled twice, doubled, scored twice and drove in another.

Jonathan Armold (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest School) (3-0) tossed six innings, scattered five hits and allowed two runs to earn the win.

Matt Mueller belted a two-run home run to left field in the top of the first for the Cougars. Jeff Dobie (0-1) tossed three and two-third innings and surrendered 11 hits and five earned runs.

Flagler hosts Tiffin University Mar. 9 at 7 p.m. at Flagler Stadium.

ST. AUGUSTINE – Blake Barber’s bases loaded ground out in the seventh inning gave top-ranked University of West Florida a lead it would not relinquish in a 4-2 win over Flagler College in a non-conference baseball game Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.

The Saints open their schedule Friday (Feb. 3) night against the defending NCAA Division II national champions, the University of West Florida. The Argonauts enter the year ranked No. 1 in the country.
