Flagler women's XC places six on USTFCCCA All-Academic

NEW ORLEANS − The Flagler College women’s cross country team was well represented on the 2009 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II All-Academic Team which was released this afternoon.

To qualify for All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have completed at least 12 semester/quarter hours through the semester of competition at the institution to be eligible. The student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and have placed in the top 30% of the total number of athletes eligible to compete at the respective regional championships or have placed in the top 50% of the field at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships.

Flagler tied Georgia College & State University for the most runners represented from a Peach Belt Conference member institution. The University of Tampa placed seven runners on the team to lead all schools.

Representing Flagler were Laura McKnight (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter HS), April Robinson (St. Augustine, Fla./Pedro Menendez HS), Madeleine Wagner (New Port Richey, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS), Samantha Kunsch (Long Island, N.Y./Center Moriches HS), Christa Lamond (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Brooke Point School) and Caroline Young (Newnan, Ga./Stetson U.).

McKnight, a sophomore, is majoring in history/pre-law. She posted a season-best time of 21:47.62 at the 5K flrunners.com Invitational on Oct. 2.

Robinson, also a sophomore, has a perfect 4.00 grade point average and is majoring in elementary education. She ran a season-best time of 21:56.69 at the flrunners.com Invitational.

Wagner, a sophomore, is an art education major at Flagler. She posted a season-best time of 22:46 at the Stetson Hatter 5K Invitational on Oct. 16.

Kunsch, a sophomore, is an elementary education major. She ran a season-best time of 23:16.13 at the flrunners.com Invitational.

Lamond is a sophomore graphic design major at Flagler. She was consistently the team’s top runner and her season-best time was 20:30.34 at the flrunners.com Invitational.

Young, a junior, is a Spanish/communication major. Her season-best run came at the flrunners.com Invitational where she posted a time of 22:50.19.

McKnight, Robinson, Wagner, Lamond, Young and Jennifer Griner were all earned 2009 Peach Belt Conference All-Academic honors in December.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Flagler College women’s cross country team finished in 14th place at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional this morning at the McAlpine Creek Park. Taylor Strekel became Flagler’s first all-region runner after finishing in 20th place with a time of 23:09.0.
