MONTEVALLO, Ala. −
Travis Coverston (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in a career-high five runs to help rally Flagler College past the University of Montevallo 11-3 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at the Kermit A. Johnson Field.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak by Flagler. The Saints improved to 21-18 overall and 9-9 in the Peach Belt. The Falcons slip to 12-30 overall and 5-16 in league play.
Coverston hit a bases clearing double, which proved to be the game winning hit, in Flagler's four-run seventh inning. He added a two-run singles in a five-run ninth.
Trailing 3-2 going into the top of the seventh,
Cale Owen (Clearwater, Fla./home school) led off the inning with a double to center which chased Montevallo starter Wes Rich from the game. Two batters later,
Zach Bove (Winter Haven, Fla./Central Florida CC) hit a single to put runners on the corner with one out. Two batters later,
Dagmar Pena (Jacksonville, Fla./U. of Tampa) doubled down the left field line which plated Owen to tie the game. The next batter walked which loaded the bases for Coverston.
Six players had multi-hit games in Flagler's 16-hit attack.
Payne Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and he drove in a pair of runs. Bove collected three singles.
Jonathan Armold (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest School) (4-1) tossed six innings and allowed nine hits, two earned runs and struck out four to earn the win.
Chris Sosebee hit a solo home run for Montevallo.
John Michael Caraway (3-5) tossed two and one-third innings in relief and surrendered seven hits and seven runs to pick up the loss in the hill for the Falcons.
