FLORENCE, S.C. − The 2010 Flagler College softball season came to an end Friday afternoon at the Peach Belt Conference Tournament at the Freedom Florence Complex. Flagler lost the opener to Armstrong Atlantic State University 4-3 in nine innings and lost the elimination game 5-0 to Lander University.
Flagler end the season with a 28-24 record in just its second year of existence and first year in the conference.
In the opener, Flagler had seven miscues which led to three unearned runs, including the game-winner in the ninth inning.
Bailie Temples led off the bottom of the ninth by reaching on a fielding error by Flagler third base
Tori Jolley (Keystone Heights, Fla./Keystone Heights HS). Nicole Huddleston laid down a sacrifice bunt, but pitcher
Kelly Riddick (Hampton, Fla./Central Florida CC) threw wildly to first base and Temples took third and Huddleston went to second. After the next two batters were retired, Heather Walker drew a walk to load the bases and then Ashley Buckett drew a bases loaded walk to end the game.
Amber Janus led the Pirates with three singles while Erin Billingsley singled and doubled. April Jowers singled twice for Armstrong Atlantic.
Megan Barnwell (14-7) went the distance and allowed just four hits, three runs and struck out 14 batters.
Heather Hill (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Indian River CC) belted a three-run home run in the fifth inning to give the Saints a 3-2 lead. She also added a single.
Riddick (18-12) pitched four and two-thirds of an inning in relief and allowed two hits and two unearned runs.
Sam Boatner (Auburndale, Fla./Polk CC) started and went four innings, allowed six hits and one earned run.

In the elimination game, Hayley Leissner (17-5) tossed a complete game six-hit shutout. She fanned six batters and retired 10-of-11-batters early in the game.
The Bearcats took advantage of a Saint miscue, scoring a run when a grounder to Hill at shortstop was bobbled and Rachelle Adkins scored the first run of the game in the sixth inning.
Lander erupted for four runs in the sixth as Ashley Proctor recorded the team’s first hit with a bunt single back to Riddick. After Natalie Smith reached on a fielder’s choice, Marilyn Newman doubled to right-center to score two runs. Adkins followed with a two-run double to left-center and the Bearcats took a 5-0 lead.
Brittney Hatem (Hialeah, Fla./Wallace CC-Dothan) singled twice for the Saints.
Riddick tossed a complete game and surrendered four hits, four earned runs and fanned nine. She retired the first 12 batters she saw and had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning.
Flagler will lose seven seniors in its inaugural class, but will look forward to the 2011 season.
