ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − No. 19 (
Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30) North Georgia College & State University jumped out to a 10-0 lead, but had to hold on as Flagler College plated seven runs in the sixth inning and two more in the ninth for a 10-9 non-conference victory Saturday evening on St. Augustine Navy League Day at Flagler Stadium
North Georgia improved to 33-15 while Flagler fell to 27-22.
North Georgia had scored 10 runs on 10 hits through the first five innings, but could only muster four hit in the last four innings to hold on for the win.
Flagler made a significant dent in North Georgia's lead in the bottom of the sixth. Eleven men went to the plate and seven runs were scored on eight hits.
John Sgromolo (Fleming Island, Fla./Clay HS) opened the inning with a double. He moved to third on
Dagmar Pena's (Jacksonville, Fla./U. of Tampa) single and then
Ollie Bertrand (Sainte-Adele, Quebec/Monroe CC) drove home Sgromolo with a base hit.
Cade Smith (Ocala, Fla./North Marion HS) continued the hit parade with an RBI single which scored Pena. After an out was recorded, Flagler hit three consecutive RBI singles which cut the North Georgia lead to 10-5. After another out was recorded, Sgromolo, up for the second time in the inning, hit a two-run double off North Georgia reliever Alex Simmons.
Flagler threatened again in the ninth as a lead off walk by Bertrand and double by
Travis Coverston (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) would chase North Georgia's Second relief pitcher, Michael Patton. Pinch hitter
Payne Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) greeted Justin Yackee with a base hit up the middle which scored both runs. But that was a close as Flagler could get as Yackee would get the next batter to ground into a double play and he fanned the last batter to record his first save.
Anders Oster led North Georgia with two singles and three runs batted in. Daniel Petitti singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored another. Chad Sage, Brad Hall and Troy Snitker each singled twice in North Georgia's 14-hit attack. Craig Brisson scored three runs.
Blake Hobby (6-4) tossed five and one-third innings and scattered 11 hits and allowed six earned runs.
Cale Owen (Clearwater, Fla./home school) and Bertrand each collected three singles. Pena singled twice and added a double. Sgromolo went 2-for-4 with the two doubles and two RBI.
Danny Vliet (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic HS) (0-1) took the loss after hurling one and two-thirds innings, and allowed three hits and one earned run, but issued four walks.
Five Flagler pitchers combined to allow only three earned runs as the defense committed five errors.
The same two teams will conclude the regular season tomorrow (May 2) at 1 p.m. at Flagler Stadium. Flagler's six seniors will be recognized before the game.
