SAVANNAH, Ga. – Fourteenth-ranked (ITA Division II 50) Francis Marion University held off No. 17 Flagler College 5-3 in the second round of the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Southeast Regional at Bacon Park Friday afternoon.
Francis Marion improved to 17-5 and will face top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University at 2 p.m. Flagler wrapped up its season with a 14-8 record and lost its second consecutive match to the Patriots by the same score and lost all three to Francis Marion this year.
Flagler scored the first point when
Rachel Gould (Toronto, Ontario/Vaughan Road Academy) and
Chelsea Taylor (Bradenton, Fla./Bradenton Prep Academy) blanked Karine Augur and Kerry Hall 8-0 at No. 3 doubles. Francis Marion won the other two doubles matches. Second-ranked Sabina Baberadova and Tereza Sykorova downed
Chelsi de Cuba (Fort Pierce, Fla./Vero Beach HS) and
Lauren Pfeiffer (Fort Pierce, Fla./Florida Gulf Coast U.) at No. 1. Thirteenth-ranked Mona Blauen and Jitka Gavdunova defeated
Veronica Figueroa (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek HS) and
Jennifer Saviano (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) 8-4.
The Saints tied the match up at 2-all after Taylor rolled over Augur 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Flagler fell behind 3-2, but tied it again when
Deon Miller (Miami, Fla./Dr. Michael Krop HS) defeated Hall in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-2. But Blauen defeated Saviano in straight sets 7-5 and 6-0 at No. 4 singles and 34th-ranked Gavdunova rallied to beat Figueroa – 2-6, 6-1 and 6-2 – to clinch the win for the Patriots.
Flagler loses de Cuba and
Roxane Alt (Montreaux, Switzerland/Lewis & Clark CC) but return seven players to next year’s team.
