JACKSONVILLE, Fla. −
Zach Shanahan (Waterford, Ireland/Waterford Institute of Technology) scored the game-winning goal off a deflected pass by
Arnel Selman (Jacksonville, Fla./Wolfson HS) as Flagler College downed Jacksonville University 4-2 in a men's soccer exhibition match Friday night at the Ashley Sports Complex.
Shanahan's goal came from 12-yards out and in the 51st minute to snap a 2-2 tie. Selman's assist was his third of the match.
The Saints scored early and often.
Mack Hough (St. Augustine, Fla./Pedro Menendez HS) scored the match's first goal when he slipped behind the Dolphin defense and received a pass from Selman in the 22nd minute. Almost six minutes later,
Cameron Will (Osteen, Fla./Pine Ridge HS) used the same tactic to give Flagler a 2-0 lead.
Jacksonville, a NCAA Division I member, cut the lead in half when Davide Faga booted home a free kick from 20 yards out in the 31st minute.
The score remained the same going into the half.
Tyler Williams scored the equalizer in the 47th minute, but the Dolphins couldn't get over the hump.
Shanahan's goal took the momentum away from JU and then
Olawale Olaoye (Gainesville, Fla./Eastside HS) scored an insurance goal in the 80th minute.
Former Dolphin keeper
Matt Gilman (Ocala, Fla./Jacksonville U.) played all 90 minutes and registered five saves.
Flagler, the Peach Belt Conference favorite, opens the season on Sept. 3 at No. 2 Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C.
