NEW YORK, N.Y. − The Flagler College golf men’s and women’s golf teams received votes in the Golf World/NGCA Preseason Coaches’ Top 25 Poll released today (Sept. 1).

The Flagler men tallied 60 points (29th overall) while the women tallied eight points (tied for 36th).

The men closed the 2009-10 campaign ranked No. 25 in the country. The Saints closed the season with a 16th place finish in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional in Wilson, N.C. Santiago Cavanagh, the Peach Belt Conference Men’s Golf Coach of the Year, returns for his third season as the Director of Golf at Flagler and welcomes back all-conference honorees Chris Bray (Hilliard, Fla./Hilliard HS) and Joel Dahlenburg (St. Augustine, Fla./Bartram Trail HS).

The men open the fall season Sept. 6-7 at the Kiawah Island (S.C.) Invitational which is hosted by USC Aiken. Flagler will host the Jay Jennison Memorial Sept. 27-28 at The Palencia Club in St. Augustine.

The defending Division II champions, Florida Southern College, tops the rankings and received 12-out-of-19 first-place votes. The Sunshine State Conference dominates the top five with Barry University in second, Nova Southeastern University in third and Lynn University in fifth place. Chico State University, ranked No. 4, is the lone non-SSC school in the top five. The Peach Belt is well represented with Georgia College in sixth, Lander University in 12th, Columbus State University in 16th and USC Aiken in 23rd place. Armstrong Atlantic State University, Clayton State University and UNC Pembroke join Flagler as conference schools receiving votes for the poll.

The women won the inaugural Peach Belt Tournament last spring, but did not qualify as a team to the Southeast Regional. Cavanagh returns second-team all-conference selection Elin Karlsson (Vanersborg, Sweden/Vaxjo Fria Gymnasium) along with three returnees and four newcomers.

The Saints open the fall season at the Queens Invitational at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Sept. 13-14. The eighth annual Flagler Fall Slam will feature 18 teams and be played at Marsh Creek Country Club in St. Augustine, Oct. 25-26.

Like the men’s poll, the Sunshine State Conference has a stranglehold atop the poll. Defending national champion, Nova Southeastern, tops the rankings and received 16-of-18 first place votes. Florida Southern is second while Rollins College is third. The University of Montevallo joins Flagler in Peach Belt schools receiving votes for the poll.
