Box Score Boxscore

BANNER ELK, N.C. − Will Frandsen's (Orange Park, Fla./Orange Park HS) goal in the 52nd minute would be all of the offense Flagler College would need to top King College 1-0 and win the championship trophy of the inaugural Michael Shope Memorial Tournament Saturday night at Tate Field on the campus of Lees-McRae College.

Flagler improved to 2-0-0 on the season while King fell to 0-1-1.

Frandsen one-touched Eammon Murphy's (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs HS) cross pass into the far corner of the goal.

Matt Gilman (Ocala, Fla./Jacksonville University) tallied one save and picked up his second consecutive shutout of the season for the Saints.

It was a tale of two halves as the Tornado lived up to its nickname and out-shot the Saints 6-1 in the first half. Two of King's shots were blocked by the Flagler defense and the other four went high or wide of the goal.

The Saints took control of the game in the second half with an 8-4 advantage in shots.

Patrick Milfeld recorded two saves for King and Joe Mayer took a team-high five shots.

King out-shot Flagler 10-9, but the Saints enjoyed a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Flagler was whistled for 17 fouls while King got nabbed for 15.

Flagler will open defense of its regular season Peach Belt Conference title when it travels to the University of Montevallo on Sept. 11 in a 7:30 p.m. Central kick off.
