Flagler volleyball holds steady at No. 22

LEXINGTON, Ky. − The Flagler College women's volleyball team holds at No. 22 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association's Division II Coaches Top 25 poll released this afternoon. This is the first regular season poll of the season.

Flagler (4-0), won its second consecutive Carolinas Challenge title by sweeping three matches and defeating USC Aiken 3-2 in the other. Flagler swept Coker College, Wingate University and Lees-McRae College.

Concordia University of St. Paul, Minn. (3-1), remains the top ranked team in Division II with 23 first-place votes, despite having its 75-match win streak snapped by Grand Valley State University at the Tampa Classic.

In second place is the University of Tampa (3-1), who moves up a spot from the preseason poll. The Spartans defeated then-No. 13 Nebraska-Kearney and Northern Kentucky and Grand Valley State. The only set-back for Tampa was a 3-1 loss to Concordia.

Cal State-San Bernardino (3-1) dropped one spot to No. 3 after losing a match at the Phoenix Inn/Great Northwest Athletic Conference Challenge in Oregon to then-No. 24 Alaska-Anchorage (3-0). Rounding out the top five is Washburn (4-0) and Minnesota-Duluth (3-0).

Others from the state of Florida, Saint Leo University (4-0) is ranked No. 6 and picked up a pair of first-place votes and the University of West Florida (3-0) comes in at No. 25 after not being ranked in the preseason poll.

The Saints will play in the AASU Pirate Volleyball Classic this weekend in Savannah, Ga. Flagler opens at 4:30 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 10) against Rollins College and then face the University of West Georgia at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Flagler takes on the University of North Alabama (10 a.m.) and then close with Florida Tech at 4:30 p.m.
