KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. − The Flagler College men’s golf team finished in a three-way tie for fourth place with a 19-over par 595 in the 36-hole Kiawah Island Invitational which was concluded Tuesday (Sept. 7) at the Cougar Point Golf Course (par 72; 6,875 yards).
Barton College bested USC Beaufort by just two strokes to claim the team title. Barton shot a 582 (+6) and USCB carded a 584 (+8).
Luiz Jacintho of Pfeiffer University and Daniel Claytor of Barton tied for first place through 36 holes with a 3-under 141. It would take four playoff holes to declare a winner. Claytor sank a birdie putt to claim medalist honors.
Chris Bray (Hilliard, Fla./Hilliard HS) and
Alex Bennett (Rochester, Mich./Scottsdale CC) led the Saints with a 3-over 147 and finished in 10-way tie for 13th place.
Justin Wingo (Fairfax, Va./George Mason U.) shaved three strokes off his first round total with a 74 and finished with a 151 (+7) and a 42nd place finish.
Joel Dahlenburg (St. Augustine, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) finished in a tie for 52nd place with a 9-over 153 as did teammate
Greg Mergel (Allenwood, N.J./Wall Township HS).
Flagler will host the inaugural Jay Jennison Memorial Sept. 27-28 at The Palencia Club in St. Augustine.
