ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − The Flagler College men's soccer team is ranked No. 8 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II National Top 25 Poll released this afternoon. Flagler also holds down the top spot in the NSCAA Southeast Region ranking. This is the highest national ranking, by the NSCAA, the Saints have had in the Division II era, and the highest since being ranked No. 3 back in 2003 when Flagler was an NAIA institution.
Flagler (2-0-0) is coming off a weekend where it won both matches in the Michael Shope Memorial Tournament at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C. The Saints opened with a 3-0 white-washing of the host Bobcats, ranked No. 2 at the time, and then took down King College the next day, 1-0, to win the championship outright.
LeMoyne College (1-0-0) of Syracuse, N.Y., is the top ranked team in the country, after being ranked No. 4 in the preseason poll. They opened the season with a 3-0 win over New York Tech in the LeMoyne Tournament, but lost yesterday to unranked Bloomfield College 2-1.
Cal State-Los Angeles (1-0-0) is second while Midwestern State University (1-0-0) and the Colorado School of Mines (1-0-0) are tied for third. Lynn University (2-0-0) rounds out the top five.
Flagler's next two opponents, the University of Montevallo (2-0-0) and Wingate University (2-0-0) are also ranked in the top 25. Wingate is No. 12 and Montevallo No. 21. Clayton State College received votes for the poll.
The Southeast Region poll stacks up this way: 1) Flagler; 2) Wingate; 3) Montevallo; 4) Clayton State; 5) Coker; 6) Lincoln Memorial; 7) North Georgia; 8) Catawba; 9) Mars Hill; t10) Lenoir-Rhyne; t10) Erskine; and t10) Queens of Charlotte.
