ST. AUGUSTINE – The No. 22 (Golf World/NGCA Division II Poll) Flagler College women's golf team finished in fifth place with a two-round total of 633 strokes at the ninth annual Flagler Fall Slam which concluded Tuesday afternoon at Marsh Creek Country Club (par: 72; yards: 6062).
Flagler shaved five shots off its first round total, but couldn't close in on the lead pack. Finishing atop the 20-team field was Lynn University who shot a 309 this morning to finish with a 617. Lynn edged out No. 23 Carson-Newman College by two strokes. Carson-Newman shaved 19 shots off its first round total and moved past two teams to press Lynn for the title. Their 300 breaks Lynn's record of 308 for the lowest round in the Flagler Fall Slam at Marsh Creek CC. Defending Flagler Fall slam champion Barry University finished in third place with a 624.
Samantha Smolen of Lynn led the 105-woman field from wire-to-wire and carded a 5-over par 149. She held off teammate Jessica Bradley to take home medalist honors. Bradley was one shot back with a 6-over 150. Four more golfers were two shots back with a 151.
Lauren Benetti (Celebration, Fla., Daytona State College) had one of the biggest improvements from the first to last rounds in the field. She knocked 11 strokes off her first round total and carded an ever par 72 to finish in a tie for 10th place with an 11-over 155.
Marie Santacroce (Mattituck, N.Y., Mattituck HS) shot an 80 today and fell back to a tie for 14th place with a 13-over 157.
Leslie Choucard (Chessy, France, Mercer University) carded an 82 and finished in a tie for 17th place with a 14-over 158.
Nicole Keyser (Cary, N.C., Green Hope HS) finished in a tie for 35th place with a 19-over 163.
Elin Karlsson (Vanersborg, Sweden, Vaxjo Fria Gymnasium) rounded out the point scorers for Flagler with a 26-over 170 and tied for 65th place.
Marissa Marinan (Niceville, Fla, Niceville HS) shot a 19-over 163 and was Flagler's top individual. She finished in a tie for 35th place along with Keyser.
Kelsey Hughes (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Allen D. Nease HS) finished with a 33-over 177 and tied for 80th place while
Laura Weaver (Jacksonville, Fla., Spartanburg Methodist College) carded a 37-over 181 and tied for 87th place.
The No. 8 and No. 10 holes proved to be the toughest over the 36-hole tournament. The No. 8 hole (par 4; 386 yards) allowed one birdie and 30 pars, but forced 52 bogies, 12 double bogies and six scores worse than double bogey. The No. 10 hole (par 4; 356 yards) yielded two birdies and 38 pars, but was responsible for 35 bogies, 16 double bogies and 10 scores worse than double bogey.
This concludes to fall schedule for the Saints. Up next is the Lady Moc Classic Feb. 20-21 at The Club at Eaglebrooke in Lakeland, the same course the regional tournament will be held later in the spring.
