No. 21 Flagler men finish in 10th place at Cougar Invite

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The No. 21 (Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll) Flagler College men's golf team finished in 10th place with an 893 in the 54-hole, 17-team AFLAC/Cougar Invitational which concluded Tuesday afternoon at the Country Club of Columbus (par: 71; yards: 6515).

No. 24 Georgia Southwestern State University rallied from six shots back to start the day and win the tournament by five strokes with an 856. They held off No. 3 Lynn University which carded an 861. No. 4 Barry University finished third with an 873.

Three Hurricanes finished atop the player leader board. Craig Gibson took home medalist honors with a 2-under par 211. He finished one stroke ahead of teammate Christopher Hall who shot a 1-under 212. J.P. Griffin of Georgia Southwestern and Daniel Young of Lynn tied for third place as both finished with an even par 213. 

Greg Mergel (Allenwood, N.J., Wall Township HS) led the Saints with a 6-over 219 and finished in a tie for 16th place. He had a hole-in-one on the par-3, 178-yard No. 8 hole in yesterday's first round. The ace was his first in a tournament. Joel Dahlenburg (St. Augustine, Fla., Bartram Trail HS) tied for 35th place with a 10-over 223. Christopher Waxberg (Stockholm, Sweden, Hersby) shot a 12-over 225 and tied for 46th place. Michael Boss (Lewiston, N.Y., Lewiston Porter HS) finished in a tie for 63rd place with a 17-over 230. Christopher Hughes (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Ponte Vedra HS) tied for 69th place with a 19-over 232.

Guangdian "Eddie" Huang (Orlando, Fla., The Crenshaw School) shot an 11-over 82 in the first round, but withdrew due to injury. 

Flagler will now prepare for the Rollins Invitational Oct. 24-25 at the Rio Pinar Country Club in Orlando.
