PONTE VEDRA BEACH – The No. 21 (Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll) Flagler College men's golf team finished in sixth place and
Greg Mergel (Allenwood, N.J., Wall Township HS) took home medalist honors with an even par 216 at the Marjorie Whitney Invitational which concluded Tuesday at TPC Sawgrass Pete Dye's Valley Course (par: 72; yards: 6848).
Flagler shot a 317 in the final round to conclude the tournament with a 934. No. 14 Nova Southeastern University, who started the day with a six-shot lead, carded the lowest round of the day (301) to finish with an 894 and won by nine strokes. No. 4 Barry University finished second in the 12-team field with a 903.
Mergel trailed by four strokes going into the final round, but was able to make up the difference in the final round with a 1-over par 73. It was his first collegiate tournament win and the first time he's topped the field since the Flagler Tri-Match Mar. 16, 2011. The leader after two rounds, Ben Taylor of NSU, shot a 6-over 78 in the final round to finish with a 1-over 217.
Joel Dahlenburg (St. Augustine, Fla., Bartram Trail HS) shot a 78 today and finished in a tie for 28th place with a 22-over 238.
Andrew McCracken (Virginia Beach, Va., First Colonial HS) tied Dahlenburg for 28th place after shooting an 84 in the blustery conditions.
Michael Boss (Lewiston, N.Y., Lewiston Porter HS) tied for 39th place with a 26-over 242.
Travis Ralph (St. Petersburg, Fla., St. Petersburg College) rounded out the team with a 36-over 252 and tied for 53rd place.
This concludes the fall season for the Saints. Next up for Flagler is the Outback Steakhouse Intercollegiate Feb. 6-7 at Panama City, Fla.
