ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College softball program and fourth-year head coach
Kristen Overton announced its 2012 schedule this afternoon. The Saints will play 54 games with 22 of those being played at Flagler Field. Flagler will also face a 20-game Peach Belt Conference slate.
This may be the most challenging schedule the Saints have faced in their brief four-year existence. Flagler will face four teams that were ranked in the final NFCA Division II Top 25 and nine teams who advanced to NCAA regionals, including two that advanced to the elite eight.
For the second year in a row, Flagler will open its season at home. The Saints host Lynn University on Feb. 4 and follow that with Florida Tech on Feb. 5. That kicks off a stretch where Flagler opens against seven different Sunshine State Conference schools.
For the third year in a row, the Saints will play in the Eckerd Triton Spring Invitational Feb. 10-12 at Clearwater, Fla. Flagler will face SSC members Lynn, Barry, Florida Southern, Nova Southeastern and Tampa. The Spartans finished ranked No. 23 in the country and played in the South Regional last year.
On Feb. 15, Flagler heads to Saint Leo for a mid-week doubleheader.
Webber International University and Eckerd College visit Flagler that weekend (Feb. 18-19).
Feb. 25-26, Flagler will play in an elite Division II tournament – the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic – at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista. Some of the top teams in the country will be playing in that tournament.
Flagler follows that by playing six games, on the road, in three days (Mar. 1-3). The Saints open conference play on Mar. 1 against USC Aiken. They head north to Spartanburg to play in the Mid-South Classic where they will face Lincoln Memorial University and Carson-Newman College on Mar. 2. Carson-Newman advanced to the NCAA regional tournament last season. Flagler caps the road trip with a pair of games against Lenoir-Rhyne University and Glenville State University. Lenoir-Rhyne has advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals the past two years.
Flagler returns home where it will host four doubleheaders in a row. Palm Beach Atlantic University visits St. Augustine on Mar. 7 with Limestone College (Mar. 9) and Lander University (Mar. 10) coming in over the weekend.
Three-time Peach Belt Conference champion North Georgia College & State University travels to Flagler on Mar. 13. The two teams met five times last year with North Georgia winning all of them, including two one-run games. Flagler and North Georgia played an epic 2-1, 15-inning game in the conference tournament. North Georgia ended last year ranked No. 4.
Flagler then embarks on a 12-game road trip. The Saints head to Milledgeville to take on Georgia College on Mar. 15 and then head to Salisbury, N.C. and face Catawba College (Mar. 17). The following day Flagler heads to Hartsville, S.C., to take on Coker College.
The next weekend (Mar. 24-25), Flagler continues its road swing at UNC Pembroke and Francis Marion University. The road swing ends Mar. 28 in Melbourne against Florida Tech.
Three more conference doubleheaders await the Saints, but in St. Augustine. Georgia Southwestern is first on the docket (Mar. 31) followed by Columbus State University (Apr. 1). The final regular season home game will be Apr. 7 against Armstrong Atlantic State University.
Flagler wraps up the regular season on the road Apr. 14 at Augusta State University.
The Peach Belt Conference Tournament has changed to a single-elimination format and will be played Apr. 21-22 at Columbus, Ga.
The NCAA Division II Southeast Regionals will be played May 4-6 with the Super Regionals to be played May 11-12. The elite eight will be played May 15-19 at Louisville, Ky.
