ST. AUGUSTINE – Tiffany McClure sank the first of two free throws with 2:51 left to play to give the University of Montevallo a 54-53 lead and held off Flagler College in the end to pull out a 58-55 win in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
Montevallo snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 7-9 overall and 2-5 in the Peach Belt. Flagler lost its fifth consecutive game and dropped to 2-15 overall and 1-10 in league play.
Davia Harris came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. She also added five rebounds. McClure finished with 11 points and seven rebounds while Shavonne Seymore tacked on 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. Seymore scored 10 of her 11 points in the first half alone.
The Falcons held a slight 42-37 advantage in rebounding and grabbed 17 offensive boards which led to 15 second chance points.
Jen Knurek (Orlando, Fla., Lake Mary HS) recorded her second double-double of the season as she scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Treva Mason (Orlando, Fla., West Orange HS) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
The Saints shot 45.2% (14-31) in the second half to wipe out a 10-point halftime lead by the Falcons.
Flagler opened the game by scoring the first five points and held the lead for most of the first half.
McClure sank a pair of free throws with 5:17 left to give Montevallo its first lead (18-17) since holding a 9-7 advantage at the 13:18 mark. Those free throws started a 14-3 run by the Falcons to close out the first half.
The Saints chipped away at the deficit and took the lead (45-44) on a
Shelbi Lindsey (Apopka, Fla., Lake Mary HS) 10-foot jumper with 8:50 to go. Her basket capped a 23-12 spurt by Flagler to open the second half.
The lead would trade hands five more times until McClure hit the first of her two free throw shots.
Flagler travels to Valdosta State University on Thursday (Jan. 26) for a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt.
