ST. AUGUSTINE – Blake Barber's bases loaded ground out in the seventh inning gave top-ranked University of West Florida a lead it would not relinquish in a 4-2 win over Flagler College in a non-conference baseball game Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
West Florida evens its record at 1-1 while Flagler falls to 1-1.
Dustin Saulmon led off the seventh with a double to right-center after falling behind 0-2 in the count to Flagler reliever
Jake Brandenberger (North Port, Fla., North Port HS) (0-1). Michael Tomlinson followed by drawing a four-pitch walk and Leo Lamarche bunted a ball over third base allowing the runners to move up a base. Barber grounded out to second base and Saulmon scored on the play to give West Florida its first lead of the game, 2-1. Taye Larry continued the rally with a base hit to right field scoring Tomlinson. With runners on the corners, Andrew Rodriguez came to plate and got ahead 2-0, but was hit on the third pitch to load the bases again. That chased Brandenberger from the game and
Danny Brown came on to stop the rally. Billy O'Connor hit a tapped back to the mound and Brown got the force out at the plate. But Brown threw a wild pitch to allow another Argonaut run before striking out Josh Huggins to end the inning.
Five different West Florida players had hits. Jordan DeLorenzo (1-0) picked up the win in relief after tossing 2.2 innings and allowing just one hit, one run, and striking out three batters. Josh Tanski started and lasted five innings and scattered four hits, allowed one run and fanned four. Bobby Parker came on in the eighth and pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings to earn his first save of the season.
Kyle Foti (Stamford, Conn., Trinity Catholic HS) belted a solo home run in the second inning to give Flagler an early 1-0 lead.
Brett Moreland (Charles Town, W.Va., Frederick CC) tripled in the eighth and later scored on
Jay Laurienzo's (Tampa, Fla., Santa Fe College) sacrifice fly.
Brandenberger tossed two-thirds of an inning and surrendered three hits and three runs.
Micah Kellogg (Lakewood, N.Y., Jamestown CC) started and went 5.2 innings. He allowed just two hits, one unearned run, and struck out four batters.
Drew Heifner (Kissimmee, Fla., Osceola HS) closed the ninth and struck out two of the three batters he faced.
