Flagler teams partner with the Florida School for the Deaf & Blind

ST. AUGUSTINE – Members of the Flagler College men's basketball team and both men's and women's cross country teams volunteered time at the annual Goalball tournament put on by the Florida School for the Deaf & Blind earlier this month.

Goalball is a game developed after World War II to help blinded war veterans through their rehabilitation. FSDB has held the Goalball Tournament in its Copeland Recreation and Fitness Center for the Blind since 2012. The building was constructed specifically for blind/visually-impaired sports and it is the first of its kind. FSDB is nationally known for its commitment to Goalball.

The two day event saw vigorous competition from all participants. Flagler student-athletes volunteered as referees, scorekeepers and clock operators. It was a completely rewarding experience for the 18 athletes from three different teams to be a part of.

"This is a great opportunity to interact with kids from all over the country while supporting a local organization," said assistant men's basketball coach Kyle Cregan. "The student-athletes leave with an appreciation of all the physical gifts they have and a respect for the competitiveness of the teams participating in the event."
