Baseball
John "Jeb" Backus - Backus racked up a list of accomplishments during his three-year baseball career at Flagler. The 1987 graduate was named NAIA Honorable Mention All-American and was selected on the All-district and All-area teams that same year. Backus was also the District 25 tournament Most Valuable Player when the Saints won the district championship. Today, Backus is the Director of Operations and Chief Operating Officer of the YMCA in Norwalk, Conn. |
Baseball
Ricky Bowrosen - Bowrosen a 1992 business administration graduate, was a record setter when he played baseball. In 1991, the two-year infield starter for the Saints set the record for triples in a season. He was a 22nd-round selection by the Chicago White Sox organization in the Major League Baseball draft and spent three seasons in the White Sox's organization as an infielder and outfielder. Today, he teaches at Atlantic High School. |
Men's Basketball
Barry Craig - Craig graduated from Flagler College in 1977 with a degree in physical education. He was a four-year letter winner in basketball and a two-year letter winner in baseball. Craig was the Saints' MVP in 1977 and 1978, and is the 2nd all-time leading scorer in Flagler history for basketball. He is currently athletic director at Bartram Trail High School. |
Men's Tennis
Gordon Jones received national attention in the May 1977 issue of Sports Illustrated magazine as the "Athlete of the Week" while playing tennis at Flagler. In addition to this publicity, the 1977 graduate was a 1977 NAIA Singles Champion as well as the 1977 Doubles Champion. He was also the Most Valuable Player on the 1977 NAIA National Championship team and a first team All-American. Currently, Jones is an attorney at Jones & McCorkie in Jacksonville. |
Softball and Women's Basketball
Jami Friedman-Lind - Friedman-Lind graduated in 1979 with a degree in physical education. She was a member of the women's basketball and softball teams, playing on state championship teams for basketball in '76-'77, '77-'78 and '78-'79, and two state championships teams for softball in '75-'76 and '76-'77. In 1979 she was MVP in softball and received numerous all-tournament awards. She is currently in her 18th year as head women's softball coach at FCCJ in Jacksonville. |
Men's Basketball
Norm Mason - Mason held the single-game scoring record when he played basketball at Flagler - a 40-point game against Valdosta State University. During his basketball career at Flagler, the 1979 graduate was an NAIA Second-Team All-District player in 1978 and a First-Team All-District player in 1979. From 1978 to '79, Mason was the Most Valuable Player for the Saints and won two All-Tournament honors. Jones went on to get his master's from the University of Florida in 1981. Currently, he is a real-estate broker at GMAC Complete Realty. |
Men's Tennis
Peter Scott was Flagler's first head tennis coach in 1974. His best team record was in 1977 when the Saints won Flagler's first NAIA National Championship. In 1978, 1985 and 1988, the Saints won the NAIA Doubles Championship, and in 1986, the team brought home the next National Championship. Scott was recognized as the NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1978, 1985 and 1986. He also was named Coach of the Year from the Florida Professional Tennis Association. He retired from Flagler as the men's tennis coach in 1989 compiling a record of 441 wins and 186 losses. |
Softball, Volleyball, Women's Basketball
Betty Stansel - Stansel was born in St. Augustine and graduated from Flagler College in 1976 with a degree in physical education. She was a member of several state championship teams while at Flagler: Softball 1972-76, Volleyball 1972-73 and Basketball 1972-73, 1973-74. She was selected First-Team All-State softball player all four years and was honored as outstanding player of the year in softball, volleyball and basketball. She is currently the department head of Health and Physical Education at Pedro Menendez High School, as well as the head varsity volleyball coach. She has won numerous district titles and has had two state final-four appearances. |
Men's Tennis
Tobias Svantesson - Tennis has been an integral part of Tobias Svantesson's life. He won both the singles and doubles championships and was the NAIA Most Valuable Player. That same year, he was honored as an NAIA All-American. Svantesson was also on the 1985 championship team. He spent eight years on the ATP Tour reaching a world ranking of 89th in singles and 64th in doubles. Today, he owns and manages E-Tennis, Inc., a specialties tennis business in West Palm Beach. |
Volleyball and Women's Basketball
Jenny Zorn - Zorn played both volleyball and basketball during her time at Flagler. The 1980 social science graduate received several awards for her efforts and was an all-star center for the 1976-'77 state championship team. She was co-caption of the volleyball team and excelled as a middle blocker and setter. Zorn's achievements made her the Most Valuable Player of the 1979 volleyball team. She earned her Ph.D. from Ohio University and currently is an associate dean and professor at California State University at San Bernardino. |
